Newsletters with Mailtani
Mailtani makes it straightforward to run a newsletter — grow your subscriber list with embeddable signup forms, send issues as broadcast campaigns, and track open and click rates. Since you bring your own sending provider, there are no per-subscriber fees as your audience grows.
Newsletter Setup Overview
- Create a List for your subscribers
- Add a Signup Form to capture new subscribers
- Write and send each issue as a Broadcast
- Monitor opens and clicks in Analytics
Step 1 — Create a Subscriber List
Go to Contacts > Lists > New List and name it (e.g. "Newsletter", "Weekly Digest Subscribers"). Lists are the audience target for your broadcasts — every subscriber goes here.
If you have existing subscribers, import them via Contacts > Import and assign them to the list during import.
Step 2 — Add a Signup Form
Signup forms collect new subscribers and add them directly to your list.
Go to Subscribe Forms > New Form and configure:
- List — which list new subscribers are added to
- Fields — which fields to collect (email is required; first name is recommended)
- Email verification — optionally require subscribers to confirm their email address before being added
- Success message or redirect — what happens after submission
- Brand color — match your newsletter's visual identity
Each form gets:
- A hosted URL at
mailtani.com/subscribe/{uuid}— link to it from your website, social profiles, or email signature - An embed code (
<iframe>) — drop into any page on your own domain
Step 3 — Send a Newsletter Issue
Each newsletter issue is a Broadcast campaign.
- Go to Campaigns > New Campaign > Broadcast
- Write your subject line — this is the most important factor for open rate
- Write the email body using the rich-text editor
- Select your subscriber list as the audience
- Review the contact count
- Send immediately or schedule for a specific date/time
Personalization
Address each subscriber by name:
If first_name isn't available, use a fallback via spintax:
Reusing Issues
You can duplicate any past broadcast to reuse the layout and subject line format for a new issue.
Unsubscribe Management
Every broadcast automatically includes a one-click unsubscribe link. When a subscriber clicks it:
- They're immediately marked as
unsubscribedin Mailtani - They're added to the suppression list
- They won't receive future broadcasts
This is handled automatically — you don't need to manage a separate suppression list or check against it manually. It's CAN-SPAM and GDPR compliant by default.
Subscriber Management
Viewing Your Subscribers
Go to Contacts and filter by your newsletter list to see all subscribers. Contact statuses:
Tags and Segments
Use tags and segments to send targeted issues to subsets of your list. For example:
- Tag
vipfor paid subscribers or long-time readers — send them exclusive content - Segment by
custom.interests = "design"— send only design-relevant issues to that group
Create a segment at Segments > New Segment and select it as your broadcast audience.
Analytics
After each send, check performance under Analytics or by opening the campaign:
Open rate trends over time are the best indicator of list health and content relevance.
Growing Your List
Ideas for growing your newsletter subscriber base:
- Add the signup form URL to your Twitter/X bio, LinkedIn profile, and email signature
- Embed the form on your website homepage or blog sidebar
- Mention your newsletter in cold email sequences (add a subtle subscribe link in your signature)
- Add a "forward to a friend" note at the bottom of popular issues
- Run a simple lead magnet (checklist, template, mini-guide) that gates behind the signup form
