How It Works in Practice

How to Launch Your Newsletter with mailtani

Create a subscriber list

Go to Contacts > Lists > New List and name it (e.g. "Newsletter Subscribers" or "Weekly Digest"). This list is the audience target for every issue you send. If you have existing subscribers, go to Contacts > Import and upload a CSV — assign them to the list during import. Your list is yours: always exportable, never locked in.

Set up a signup form

Go to Subscribe Forms > New Form. Choose which list new subscribers are added to, which fields to collect (email and first name are standard), and what happens after submission. You get an inline form to embed directly on your page, a popup button that opens the form in an overlay, and a hosted signup URL to link from your bio or website. Enable the email verification link for double opt-in — confirmed subscribers are added to your list automatically.

Add the signup URL to your Twitter/X bio, LinkedIn profile, and email signature. These three placements alone can drive consistent organic subscriber growth.

Connect your sending domain

Go to Settings > Sending Emails and add your AWS SES or Resend credentials. Then go to Settings > Domains and add your sending domain. mailtani shows exactly which DNS records to add for SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. Sending from your own domain means deliverability is tied to your reputation — not a shared platform pool. It also means every email carries your brand, not a third-party footer.

Create a welcome sequence for new subscribers

Go to Campaigns > New Campaign > Sequence. Build a 3–5 email welcome series: introduce yourself, share your best past issue, and set expectations for what comes next. Set delays between steps (day 1, day 3, day 7). When you enroll a list, every new subscriber who joins that list will receive the sequence automatically — passive onboarding at zero marginal effort.

Welcome sequences consistently outperform regular issues on open rate (often 50–70%). Write them as carefully as you would your best issue.

Send each issue as a broadcast

Go to Campaigns > New Campaign > Broadcast for each newsletter issue. Write your subject line and body in the rich-text editor, select your subscriber list as the audience, and schedule or send immediately. Every broadcast includes automatic one-click unsubscribe handling — contacts who unsubscribe are instantly suppressed from future sends, CAN-SPAM and GDPR compliant with no extra setup.

Duplicate past broadcasts to reuse your layout and subject line format — useful if you have a consistent newsletter template.

Track open and click rates per issue

After each send, check performance under Analytics. The key metrics for newsletters are open rate, click rate, and unsubscribe rate. Healthy benchmarks: 25–45% open rate for an engaged list, 2–10% click rate, under 0.5% unsubscribe rate. A declining open rate is usually a signal to clean your list, improve subject lines, or re-engage inactive subscribers before they drag down your domain reputation.
